BCCF are delighted to be joined by Natalie Pearson for this talk on “Let's Talk About Food Waste”

If food waste were a country it would be the third biggest emitter of greenhouse gases after the USA and China (FAO, 2013). It is one of the greatest challenges of our time and according to Project Drawdown reducing food waste is the biggest thing we can do to tackle climate change. But ‘waste’ is a dirty word and when we throw something away it is ‘out of sight, out of mind’. We need to change this. We need to talk about it more.

Natalie Pearson is a PhD researcher exploring the sensemaking processes that people who work in the hospitality industry go through when tackling food waste. Central to her research is communication and how we talk about food so that we take more notice and prevent it being wasted. Natalie believes strongly in the value of conversation, community and reconnection with food in doing this.

In this session , Natalie would like to take a participative approach to discussing solutions we can take as individuals, businesses and society. The talk will start with a short introduction to food waste and then the floor is yours so please come with questions and ideas, no matter how big or small, that we can discuss as a group and learn from each other. Hopefully, we can find a way to turn some of your ideas into reality.

There will be time for a Q&A and discussion towards the end of the talk.
