Join the team and creatives of Tastes Like Home Bedford for an afternoon of exploration, discovery & mapping.

We’ve assembled a small team of local creatives to help us dig up wonderful stories about Bedford’s appetites: past and future as we work to cook up an Audio Trail across the town centre that explores the delicious past & present of a town packed with flavour & stories.

Now we want to hear from you, inhabitants of Bedford, and find out more about the undiscovered treasure trove of food & culture that exists and has existed in the town.

Alongside collecting your food stories & reminiscences we have 2 exciting opportunities for you to explore during your afternoon visit:

Artist Sophie Herxheimer will be joining us for her Stories Collected Live in Ink project (https://www.sophieherxheimer.com/stories-collected-live-in-ink) giving you the opportunity to have your memories of food and drink immortalised in picture and writing for the project.

There will also be a chance to hear the play SALT by award-winning writer Abhishek Majumdar produced by Echo Chamber Audio. Written during the pandemic, SALT is about a family of three women, a mother and two daughters who tell each other stories and fake the food on their plate, in order to walk the hard line between hunger and dignity. 

Abhishek wrote Salt as part of the 'Urgent Drama' programme of Folkteatern Goteborg, Sweden. Since then it has been translated to Hindi, Gujarati and this is its first production in English.

This short 30min audio play will be running throughout the day starting at 1pm, & with the last performance at 4pm.

Tastes Like Home is a project exploring Bedford’s food & drink culture and the changing face of food in the town.

Tastes Like Home is on a mission to uncover and share the delicious memories of food and drink ingrained in the taste buds of Bedford and its residents. Picture this: we're hunting for stories spiced up with flavours from old restaurants, markets, stores, and corner shops. And guess what? We're cooking up a storm with local independent establishments to engage all sorts of taste buds and unravel memories tied to the universal feast that binds us together—nourishment.

Embarking on a flavour-packed adventure in Bedford, Tastes Like Home is a culinary journey spanning Winter and Spring 2023/24. Generously flavoured with funding by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, with thanks to the awesome National Lottery players, and heaped with a generous portion of funding from Historic England’s High Street Heritage Action Zone for Bedford.
