A timeless classic, Coward first produced Blithe Spirit in 1941, supposedly having written it in 5 days. It was an instant success, creating a new long-run record for non-musical British plays of 1,997 performances. It has endured as one of his most popular comedies.
The play concerns socialite and novelist Charles Condomine who, wishing to learn about the occult for a novel he is writing, arranges for an eccentric medium, Madame Arcati, to hold a seance at his house. At the seance, she inadvertently summons Charles's first wife, Elvira, who has been dead for ten years.....
Only Charles can see or hear Elvira, and his second wife, Ruth, does not believe that Elvira exists until a floating vase is handed to her out of thin air. Chaos ensues as the ghostly Elvira makes continued, and increasingly desperate, efforts to disrupt Charles's current marriage....
Tickets for this show are priced at £7.50 with a concession price of £6.50 on the Wednesday evening, and at £8.50 with a concession price of £7.00 on all other evenings.
Tickets are also available from the Central Box Office in Harpur Street, Bedford, Telephone 01234-269519.
